Why did I just hear about this movie?

October 30, 2007 · 1 Comment

Maybe I am just an English major and that is why I am SUPER EXCITED for the new movie Beowulf, but it looks SO COOL!  (I recommend Seamus Haney’s translation.  I read it last semester in my early British Literature class.)  November 16th!!!  Guess what I will be doing for my birthday!  (Well, maybe not quite that.)

Why Manning and Brady have NOTHING on Favre.

October 30, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Peyton Manning = Way too concerned with commercializing himself.  How many national commercials has he done?  I am not a fan of a guy who over-exploits himself.

Tom Brady = Not a nice guy.  He is too much of a ladies man.  No one likes a man-whore.

Brett Favre = The greatest of them all.  I will not listen to the endless chatter about Brady and Manning until they actually prove themselves.   How many times has he been tested by life?  And how many times has he pulled though?  I am very pleased with the way this season is going.  Sure, the Patriots and Colts are still undefeated, but does that mean anything in the long run?  The Rockies were undefeated up until the World Series in the post season.  Until they were swept by the Red Sox.  Yes, I have grown up in a family of Packer fans.  I was born in the city of Green Bay.  But when you think about it, Brett has been with them practically my entire life.  I was about 5 years old when he came to Green Bay.  Not even LAMBEAU itself has remained constant.  He has always been there, always started.  If and when he does retire, that will be a sad, sad day for this girl.

Ten years, four years, two years, today

October 30, 2007 · Leave a Comment

I guess I have changed a little in the past ten years.

1.) How old were you?  Eleven

2.) Where did you go to school?  Breckenridge Elementary School

3.) where did you work?  As I was merely eleven years of age, if I had a job, it would violate child labor laws.

4) Where did you live?  Breckenridge, Minnesota

5.) Where did you hang out?  The park?  School?  I think this was the year of my tomboy phase.

6.) Did you wear glasses?  Not quite yet.

7.) Who was your best friend?  I think Morgan moved away by this point, so it was LeAnn by age 11.

8.) How many tattoos did you have?  Honestly, I was 11!

9.) How many piercings did you have?  One hole in each earlobe.

10.) What car did you drive?  I rode in our family’s blue van (which is now dying a slow and painful death.)

11.) Had you been to a real party?  I consider birthday parties to be real, so of course!  (But the question is probably posed as one with a keg or two.)

12.) Had you had your heart broken?  Actually, yes.  My first crush broke my heart when I was 10

1.) How old were you?  Seventeen

2.) Where did you go to school?  Marinette High School

3.) Where did you work?  I babysat for a few families, but I didn’t have a “real” tax paying job yet.

4.) Where did you live?  Marinette, Wisconsin

5.) Where did you hang out?  The mall, the movies, the theater, Angie, Jenni, Michelle, or Doug’s houses.

6.)Did you wear glasses?  Yes, I did.

7.) Who was your best friend?  LeAnn and I still kept in regular touch, but Jenni, Angie, Michelle, and Doug were my people.

9.) How many tattoos did you have?  Still zero

10)How many piercings did u have?  Still one in each ear.

11.) What car did you drive?  I didn’t have my own car (and still don’t!)  But I drove the family cars from time to time.

12.) Had your heart broken?  Only crushes.  I know now those mean hardly anything.

13.) Been to a real party?  I didn’t drink in high school.

14.) Were you Single/Taken/Married/Divorced?  Single

————2 years ago————–

1.) How old were you?  19

2.) Where did you go to school?  University of Minnesota

3.) Where did you work?  Anchor, with my Dad on breaks from school.

9.) How many piercings did you have?  Still, just the ears.

10.) What car did you drive?  Still, no car.  We got around via bus.

11.) Had your heart broken?  This is the time of the truly crushing crush.  The crush to end all serious crushes.

12.) Were you Single/Taken/Married/Divorced?  Single

—————–Today—————

1.) How old are you?  Technically, I am 20, but my birthday is in two weeks and two days.  So, I am saying 21.

This morning the temperature read thirty-one degrees. Brrr…

The official end to the major league baseball season is here.  The Red Sox swept the Rockies 4-0 to win the World Series tonight.  Now, we can focus on next year.  Come March 31st (weird, I know, but it is a Monday) the 2008 season will begin and everyone will be equal and everyone will again have the chance to say, “This is our year.”  There are a couple awards to be handed out in the next few weeks (MVP and Cy Young) and the fact that a couple of the Twins will most likely be lost to free agency, but really…that is it.  So no more baseball for at least 3 months.  Maybe 3 and a half before everything gets hyped up for Spring Training.  But they’ll only break my heart, those Twins.

I had a really fun time this weekend.  It was the official weekend of Halloween parties, and I attended a couple Friday night.  I have acquired a taste for taking ridiculous photos of everything, it seems.  A friend from home visited Doug and I this weekend too, which was really nice.  I love having visitors and she was the very first person to truly befriend me when I moved to Marinette in 2001.

I have this clock, that used to come in handy.  Whenever Daylight Savings Time rolls around, it will automatically change the time, so I don’t forget.  However, they passed the bill to delay this occurrence by one week.  This morning, I had my alarm go off at eight o’clock–and it did say 8:00–but it also thought DST was today.  Alas, it will not happen until next week and I really woke up around 9:30 by the time I realized what had happened.  Next time, I shall set two different clock alarms so this doesn’t happen.  I am glad we have an extra week for more sunlight.  I don’t know what I will do when it gets dark before five.  It will make going to my night class all the more difficult when it is already dark before I leave!

I have a pretty big week ahead of me: it is time for me to do laundry soon, Halloween, National Novel Writing Month begins Thursday (and so will my novel writing, of course), and I am going to see the original play “Kirby” at the History Theatre in St. Paul on Saturday.  Doug’s internship is there and he receives comp tickets, which is very nice for poor theatre-loving college students.  (Especially when the internships are unpaid.)  I guess that means baseball will not be entirely absent from my mind quite yet.  :-)

Hello, my name is Megan and I love to write.

October 26, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Here is the deal: I used to have this blog over on Blogger, but was bored with the style over there and decided to give WordPress a try.  All the posts prior to this one are from my old account, I just imported them over here.  Eventually I will have everything set up to my satisfaction and I will update my regulars to change their links.  (Hi Grandma!!)  So, here I am.  I like to write, and this puts my work out in the open, so I blog.  Sometimes I have interesting stories, I would like to believe.  This weekend is Halloween party weekend, so I may have a story or two.  It is also almost my 21st birthday–less than 3 weeks now–so maybe my life will get a little more interesting.  I won’t have to go home on a Friday night while my friends go hang out at a bar in Dinkytown.  I enjoy comments, by the way, as any good writer appreciates criticism of all kinds.

Oh, F. Scott…thank you for your words.

Okay, so I decided what I will be for Halloween this year! A flapper, circa 1920, The Great Gastby-like. Which means, I have a trip to the thrift store, Goodwill in the works for tomorrow or so. I wanted it to be something at least semi-literary, and Gatsby is pretty much my favorite book in the world, so this is perfect! (I am secretly in love with the language of F. Scott Fitzgerald. Or not.) All I need to find is a sleeveless, knee-length dress without a waist, and some red lipstick. (The lipstick I may need to get used to, as all I use now is chapstick. Makeup in general for me consists of a little mascara and the occasional eyeliner. The eyeliner needs to be for a special occasion because I am not into the whole “paint your face” thing. I blame figure skating when I was a wee one. You should see the pictures, I could paint my bedroom with the stuff pasted on!) Okay, now I need to make some tator tot hot dish, as I meant to start it earlier, but all of the sudden it is 8:30 and I have yet to eat dinner. Oh, college. My eating patterns are entirely messed up.

We’ve come a long way, Doug…you’re the best! What would I do without you? :-) You are family to me, I love you.

I can’t get over my obsession with the name Atticus.

October 21, 2007 · Leave a Comment

I want a cat of my own. I am sitting next to Emma on the couch and she looks so peaceful at the moment. Except that she snores SO loudly. Remember how I have said in the past that I want to name one of my children Atticus? (If you don’t recognize that name, I don’t know if we can be friends.) Now I am thinking that I could name either a cat or a dog after the literary great. Earlier, Emma was curled up with my foot. I enjoy having the cat around to cuddle with when a bad day rolls around. Today wasn’t bad necessarily, I am just experiencing a normal occurrence. I did accomplish a lot this afternoon. I wrote a 6 page paper, complete with 3 identifications. For Russian History, our professor gave us a take home midterm. This was 2 weeks ago. It is due tomorrow night. Good thing I started it the day before! What kind of a college student would I be if I didn’t? Sometimes I wish I were a cat. Life would be so much easier. But in all honesty, I am very content with how things are going right now. I have a million worries, but when it all comes down to it, I enjoy my life. I cannot wait for November to arrive so I can start writing this novel I have become so invested in. I was interviewing my friends earlier today about their high school experiences. Now I have a use for the notepad Colleen brought back for me from Belgium. I am feeling so incredibly thrilled for this story. It is something that needs to be told and brought out into the open. It could start a dialogue that has been direly ignored.

P.S. Can the ALCS be over now? I don’t care whether Boston or Cleveland wins anymore…I don’t like either of them. Go Rockies, I guess!

Two Things:

October 19, 2007 · 2 Comments

1. The haunted house at the Soap Factory was good, but I wasn’t as frightened as I thought I would be. I am alive, after all. I just reminded myself that these were real people, and it was made up. I tried not to think about the fact that the basement probably is very very haunted.

2. I now, thanks to my good friend Tracy (whose 21st birthday is this week!!!) have my very own pepper spray. Now I won’t be as afraid to walk home from the bus stop on Monday nights after my class. You better watch out, creepers!!!

Another week…gone.

October 19, 2007 · Leave a Comment

I’ve been rooting for the Cleveland Indians throughout this postseason. But now, I am over it. Clearly, I have been hating them all season long, so why would I want them to succeed even further? They beat us by what, 17 games in the end? Plus, I hear the Cleveland fans are terrible. Worse than Yankee fans in terms of harassment. I was actually relieved that the Indians did not clinch their berth in the World Series last night. In fact, maybe I want the Red Sox to beat them. In the end, I will be rooting for the Rockies I suppose. But then, who’s to say those fans aren’t bad either? And Minnesotans, well, I know from first-hand experience they can be quite mean, even when it is unintentional.

This has been a crazy week. I have been trying to catch up on my sleep all week, and it hasn’t worked yet. I am still behind from last weekend, and here’s another one already! Since when did time fly so fast? Next week will be week number eight of the semester! Out of fifteen!! I can’t believe it! I had a midterm for my Women’s American History class yesterday, which went well. I have to write an essay for the take-home midterm for Russian History by Monday. Then I think the craziness of October will be over. Until the first week of November when papers are due again and round two of midterms starts up. Oh, well…this is what I am paying for, right? Thankfully we have a full four weeks of vacation at break time! Usually it is 3 and a half. But MLK Jr. Day is a week later than usual. No complaints here.

Autumn is here. The gloomy, cloudy, rainy, crummy part of the season, that is. We had one nice day in the past two weeks. Tomorrow is supposed to be gorgeous according to our meteorologists. 68 degrees and sunny? I think so. And I believe I have stated this many time before, but…that is perfect. If only every day was like that…but then I wouldn’t be in Minnesota anymore. For here, it is either too hot or too cold. We are never satisfied.
